Bathroom Rituals

The New Houseguest

Sophie loved Christmas. The twinkling lights, the aroma of freshly baked cookies, and the warm, festive air made it her favorite time of year. But this holiday season came with an unwelcome guest—her mother-in-law, Diane. Diane’s home was undergoing renovations, so she’d be staying with Sophie and her husband, Jake, for a few weeks.

From the moment Diane arrived, Sophie felt on edge. Diane’s initial pleasantries quickly gave way to her usual invasive habits. As Diane unpacked, she made herself at home, commandeering the living room and offering unsolicited critiques on everything from Sophie’s decor choices to her cooking techniques.

“It’s just for a few weeks,” Sophie whispered to herself. “I can survive this.”

The Bathroom Incidents

Within days, a new problem arose. Diane began walking in on Sophie while she was in the bathroom. At first, Sophie thought it was a genuine mistake. She was sitting on the toilet when Diane barged in, gasped dramatically, and muttered an awkward “Oh, sorry!” before shutting the door. Sophie brushed it off as an accident.

But then it happened again. And again.

Each time, Sophie made sure the door was closed. Yet somehow, Diane always managed to “accidentally” walk in at the worst moments. After the third incident in a single week, Sophie felt certain it wasn’t just bad luck. She confronted Jake, hoping for support.

“Diane keeps barging in on me in the bathroom,” Sophie said one night after dinner.

Jake shrugged. “So? She’s family. It’s not a big deal.”

“Not a big deal? It’s humiliating!” Sophie exclaimed.

Jake waved her off. “She probably doesn’t mean to. Just lock the door.”

Sophie’s stomach churned. Locking the door wasn’t an option. Memories of being trapped in a bathroom as a child flooded her mind, and her hands grew clammy. “I can’t lock it,” she said quietly.

Jake sighed, clearly annoyed. “Then what do you want me to do? Talk to her?”

“Yes,” Sophie said firmly. “This needs to stop.”

A Creative Solution

Jake didn’t talk to Diane. The next day, Diane barged in again, catching Sophie mid-toothbrushing. “Oops! My bad,” Diane chirped before retreating.

Sophie had enough. If Jake wouldn’t do anything, she’d handle it herself—but in her own way. She devised a plan to make Diane think twice before barging in.

That night, Sophie stood in the bathroom, fully clothed, balancing precariously on the edge of the toilet seat in a mock ballet pose. She held her arms high above her head, like a dancer mid-performance. As expected, Diane flung open the door.

“Oh!” Diane exclaimed, staring wide-eyed.

Sophie held her pose, meeting Diane’s confused gaze. “Practicing my pliés,” she said nonchalantly.

Diane mumbled something incoherent and quickly shut the door. Sophie grinned.

Rituals and Accusations

Over the next few days, Sophie escalated her antics. One morning, Diane walked in to find Sophie standing with her hands pressed against the wall as if she were communing with spirits. Another time, Sophie sat cross-legged on the floor, humming softly, pretending to meditate.

Diane’s reactions ranged from startled confusion to thinly veiled discomfort. It wasn’t long before she stormed into the living room, where Jake was watching TV.

“Jake, I need to talk to you,” Diane said, her voice trembling. “I think Sophie’s… practicing rituals in the bathroom.”

Jake raised an eyebrow. “Rituals?”

“Yes! She’s always doing something strange in there,” Diane insisted. “It’s unsettling.”

Jake confronted Sophie that evening, visibly annoyed. “What the hell is going on?”

Sophie crossed her arms. “She keeps walking in on me. I’m making it weird so she’ll stop.”

Jake’s face turned red. “You’re acting like a child. Just lock the damn door.”

“You know why I can’t do that,” Sophie snapped. “Maybe if you’d backed me up, I wouldn’t have to resort to this.”

The Fallout

Diane was fuming. She called Jake’s siblings, relaying exaggerated tales of Sophie’s “rituals” and how “unwelcoming” she felt. Tensions hit a boiling point when Jake announced, “Mom’s demanding an apology.”

“For what? Protecting my privacy?” Sophie shot back.

“You’re making everyone uncomfortable,” Jake said. “Just apologize and end this.”

Sophie refused. “I won’t apologize for setting boundaries.”

The tension simmered until Thanksgiving dinner, where the entire family gathered. Diane’s passive-aggressive comments were in full force. She made a grand show of excusing herself to use the bathroom, muttering, “Let’s hope no one’s performing rituals in there.”

Jake’s siblings exchanged awkward glances, while Sophie focused on her plate.

A Turning Point

Later that night, Jake sat beside Sophie in bed, unusually quiet. “I’ve been thinking,” he said finally. “You were right. I should’ve backed you up.”

Sophie looked at him, surprised. “What changed?”

“Talking to my siblings,” Jake admitted. “They said Mom’s done similar things to them. It’s not okay.”

Jake promised to address the situation with Diane and set firm boundaries going forward. The next day, he sat down with his mother and explained the need for privacy and respect in their home.

Though Diane didn’t take the news well, she begrudgingly agreed to stop the intrusions.

Moving Forward

Diane left after Christmas, and the house returned to its peaceful state. Sophie and Jake worked on rebuilding their trust, and Jake made a concerted effort to stand by Sophie in future conflicts.

Though the bathroom incidents became a running joke, Sophie felt a renewed sense of empowerment. She knew that standing her ground—awkward poses and all—had been the right choice.

And next Christmas? Diane wouldn’t be getting an invite to stay.
